The guns had only just fallen silent.

By 1919, Paris was overflowing with diplomats, generals, journalists, activists, and revolutionaries, all trying to shape what the world would become after the catastrophe of World War One. The peace talks were held at the Palace of Versailles outside Paris, but the entire city became a political battlefield. Every hotel lobby, café, and hallway seemed filled with arguments about borders, nations, reparations, and revenge.

The war itself had been unlike anything Europe had experienced before.

The Treaty of Versailles ended World War One, but it did not create stability. Instead, it created a fragile and deeply contested peace built on debt, resentment, fear, and competing visions of what the modern world should become.

And almost immediately, that peace began to crack.
