Germany demands the Polish government give up the city, however, Danzig is the only way that Poland is connected to the Baltic Sea. Without this city, Poland loses a major port, but with the Germans having already taken Czechoslovakia, the country is on edge. In August of 1939, the Schleswig-Holstein arrived in the port of the Free City of Danzig. There to celebrate the anniversary of German victory in the Battle of Tannenberg in WWI. Unbeknownst to the onlookers, over 200 marines were hiding below deck. On the morning of September 1st, 1939, the ship moved from Danzig Harbor to the Bend of Five Whistles across from the small Polish military transit depot at Westerplatte. The ship opened fire at 4:43 AM. War has begun.
