Digital Humanities Badge
The USM Digital Humanities Proficiency Badge documents mastery of fundamental Digital Humanities skills and participation as a scholarly contributor in a major faculty DH research project.
To obtain the Digital Humanities Proficiency Badge, students must successfully complete HUM 501: Intro to Digital Humanities and HUM 502: Digital Humanities Practicum. These classes supply students with the necessary skills for the application of computational tools to humanities analysis and interpretation, to analyze and explain methodological approaches behind Digital Humanities scholarship, and engage with and contribute to current theoretical debates in the Digital Humanities.
These courses are taught fully online and every year, with HUM 501 occurring in the Fall semester and HUM 502 during the Spring semester. There are no prerequisites for these classes, and enrollment is open to current USM graduate students or those seeking admission to USM solely for the DH Badge.
In addition to fulfilling the DH Badge requirements, HUM 501 and HUM 502 also serve as electives that fulfill:
- Six hours towards the USM Graduate Certificate in Public History
- Six hours towards the Library Science Graduate Certificate in Archives & Special Collections
- Six hours toward the English graduate allied field requirement
- History graduate research tool requirement
Application Information
The Digital Humanities Proficiency Badge program at USM is open to those able to pursue a graduate-level degree, i.e. has received a Bachelor’s degree. This includes graduate students at The University of Southern Mississippi, graduate students at other universities, and non-students who fit the above criteria.

Obtain Verified Digital Credentials
The digital badge application platform, Credly, hosts the largest and most-connected digital credential network. Upon successful completion of the DH Badge program, participants will obtain a verified digital badge and credentials that can be displayed on LinkedIn, social media, resume/CVs, and more!
