About the Center
Housed in the School of Humanities, the University of Southern Mississippi’s Center for Digital Humanities (CDH) is an interdisciplinary research center that provides advice and technical support on digital humanities (DH) projects, organizes local and national workshops and conferences, offers courses for graduate and undergraduate students, and provides internship opportunities. As part of a research-intensive university (R1), the CDH draws on the expertise of faculty from disciplines such as English, History, and Philosophy, as well as Computer Science and Geography to create novel ways of understanding the humanities.
The CDH provides support to not only Southern Miss students, faculty, and staff, but also expertise to a variety of Mississippi scholars and institutions who utilize technology to study, preserve, and disseminate research in the humanities. In addition to partnerships with the Digital Lab (University Libraries) and the Ecospatial Lab (Gulf Coast Research Laboratory) at Southern Miss, the CDH has several regional partners, including the Mississippi Department of Archives & History, the Mississippi Digital Library, and colleges and universities across the state.

What is “Digital Humanities”?
The definition of “digital humanities,” also known as “DH,” is constantly changing and can be difficult to nail down; however, it is generally understood as a series of tools and methodologies rather than a distinct field of study like history, mathematics, or psychology. DH is the use of computational or digital technologies in the humanities, which can refer to the use of technology to compile and interpret data, or to display and share information.

What’s going on in the CDH?
Digital Humanities Proficiency Badge
The USM Digital Humanities Proficiency Badge shows mastery of fundamental Digital Humanities skills and participation as a scholarly contributor in a major faculty DH research project. Once you earn your badge, you’ll be able to share your verified credentials on social media, your resume, and more.
Mississippi Digital Humanities Hub
The Mississippi Digital Humanities Hub provides resources and training to local museums, libraries, and higher education institutions to support community-based projects that highlight and preserve the rich history of Mississippi.
Workshops and Tutorials
The CDH hosts workshops and tutorials on Digital Humanities tools, built specifically for beginners. The Center shares recordings of these workshops on the CDH YouTube page. These workshops focus on a variety of DH topics, scholarship, and tools for anyone to learn from!
Mapping Freedom – NSF-REU
Mapping Freedom engages participants with DH, geography, and computer science skills. While developing a new, user-friendly visualization tool for classroom and public use, participants use sources from the cwrgm.org project to conduct research on topics related to emancipation in Mississippi during the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction eras.
